Gary Pennington
Gary is originally from Maryland but lived in Pennsylvania for many years operating his hydrostatic transmission remanufacturing business. Numerous vacations to Maine convinced him to move to the coast after the sale of his business. A second career in photography beckoned which he continued until retirement in 2017. He lives in Harpswell with his high school sweetheart Joan.
In the early 2000’s, he discovered the hobby of woodworking. Furniture building, including a complete Shaker bedroom suite along with the construction of two seventeen foot long cedar strip kayaks helped hone his skills and penchant for perfection. The desire to turn drawer pulls lured him into the first lathe purchase.
These days Gary’s woodshop time focuses primarily on woodturning, deriving satisfaction from selecting a raw block of wood that exhibits character then turning it into a unique work of art.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 through 1968. Landing in Viet Nam in January of ’68, he was greeted by the Tet Offensive and soon found himself flying through the very unfriendly skies as a door gunner on a Huey gunship. He is both fortunate and honored to be here to share the product of his pastime.
